Autonomous Vehicle Braking

The cluster centers on debates about the safety of self-driving cars suddenly braking for road hazards like pedestrians or debris, including risks of rear-end collisions, the need for defensive driving by human drivers, and arguments over speeds, following distances, and reaction strategies.

That seems very dangerous, sometimes you need to accelerate a bit to avoid an accident.

Sounds like survivorship bias to me. A substantial fraction of drivers are generally not looking forward or paying attention at any given time... you're just rolling the dice by assuming they will see you and stop.

So, you are driving in such a manner that you cannot stop in time for toddlers, deer, or broken down cars. Perhaps if you were driving slower you would not need to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid road hazards?

Very accurate. Pretend that car drivers cannot see you, and act accordingly.

The video seems plausible. I mean, I regularly avoid road hazzards I cannot see until the car in front of me moves to avoid them. The key is to not be an ass and tailgate the person in front of you so you have time to react.

You can't predict if another driver will drive at full speed right through, while not looking in your direction. If you don't stop, you are screwed. There are other people on the road, and you can neither control nor predict their actions.

If you can't tell that somebody isn't going to throw themselves under the wheel of your car, you need to drive more slowly, so you've got time to stop when it happens.

UX problem unless in traffic; getting rammed by the next car is not my idea of safety (not to mention that slamming the brakes for no apparent reason is a textbook example of reckless driving in many places). Oh well, let's just not drive unless the street is empty, I guess ;o)

Agreed. This falls under the general rule of always assuming a car could perform any action (even if it's wrong or illegal) and making sure that you aren't in the way of it doing so. Err on the side of your own safety, even if you have to slow down to do it.

Going slower than traffic is actually unsafe and increases the chances of collisions with other drivers.
