didn't a russian jet crash recently while harassing another American drone? this seems like a bad plan
Are you filtering out military planes?
I really doubt that he was all that close to being shot down. I actually doubt fighters were scrambled or missiles armed. They might have been if he had entered restricted airspace, but from the story, it sure sounds like he did not. Even if he did enter restricted airspace, the threat would have been assessed, actions taken, and so on. Perhaps, he might have even gotten a fighter escort out of restricted airspace. Shooting down a plane over a populated area is going to be an absolute last resor
An aircraft flying unresponsive and undetetected into the most militarised areas on the planet (China, North Korea, Vietnam etc) does not sound plausible.
The MIG was no doubt there to ensure the plane obeyed air traffic controlIt's not unheard of for military jets to escort civilian planes to an airport, for examplehttps://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/ryanair-flight-escort...(Of course the situation of how the bomb threat came to be
Would probably be shot down or hacked/jammed by the Russians in a day or two
Yep, either the military or a defense-type contractor taking their new toy out for a spin. There could be a lot of reasons they didn't privately fess up afterward (at least that we know of):* The flight was an "ad hoc training exercise" that wandered a bit too far (ie not specifically approved by higher authority).* It was a capabilities test to see how well it could do stealthy observing of energy infrastructure in a civilian controlled airspace. Maybe it was because we have a secret Anti-Ballistic Missile system that "throws darts" at inbound missiles and we don't want any planes in the cross fire ?
IIRC, the US shot down some weather balloons in Jan-Feb 2023. Why not the same expediency with these drones?
Not cleared to fly in contested/dangerous airspace? Tell that to Mathias Rust:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathias_Rust
