Well there is always dtrace, strace and ptrace.
If you're on a BSD descendant check out dtrace instead - it's got a small learning curve but it's an unbelievably powerful tracer.
Most OS offer that with process tracing like ETW and DTrace.
DTrace would be nice for starters.
