It’s not weird to me. GP is arguing that the teachers unions don’t yield (sufficient) positive outcome and using their powers the wrong way, being part of the inefficient potentially corrupt bureaucracy.Whether that’s the case over there, I have no idea. But it’s not inconsistent. In my hometown I don’t recall a single person beating against the teacher’s union. Sure on particular issues there would be occasional tension, especially with negotiations with private schools, but no one argued

Be fair: teachers unions often get talked in very negative terms on HN.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you have no actual experience with teachers unions, teachers contracts, teachers liability, or school districts in general other than your own time attending schools.I have no love for unions in general, especially those I've had the misfortune of dealing with in the tech sector. I do however appreciate some of what the teachers union my wife is a member of provides. All teachers in our state (and most others) are required to purchase and hold liab

My wife, two of her brothers, their spouses and obviously many of their collective friends are public school teachers in the US. The teacher's union in our state is largely a spineless organization that will protect the points they negotiate into a contract but leave legitimate educators high and dry when it comes to real issues. It's one of the worst unions that I've had the occasion to see up close and personal...and I'm a former member of the Teamsters.

E.g. teachers' unions are subject to the same basic dynamic. The only difference is that the fallout from protecting bad teachers is usually not fatal.
