Children have nearly no risk of complications with covid vs. quite a large risk with the vaccine.
I understand wanting to protect your kids, but here’s some statistics (United States): on average, 500 kids a year die from RSV, a respiratory virus for which there is no vaccine. Last year, 200 kids died from COVID-19, for which a seemingly safe and effective vaccine exists. I understand this probably doesn’t help much since you don’t hear and think about RSV every day for a year straight, but hopefully the vaccines are approved for children soon. Hang in there :)
> My children are in those “N other people”. They are not yet able to be vaccinated. It is not their choice. The good news is (assuming that they're not immune compromised in a way that would make them vulnerable to a panoply of other viruses) they're at essentially no risk from Covid. The data on this is unassailable:https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28041775Th
Children are already the group least likely to be harmed by covid. Couple this with the data showing vaccines don’t prevent spread, but rather reduce symptoms in groups most affected, what is the point of doing this to children? An 80 year old diabetic, sure, but a perfectly healthy 5 year old? Why?
None of that is relevant or actionable. Everyone including children will be exposed regardless of what we do. Fortunately the vaccines and other treatments are pretty good at preventing severe symptoms.https://www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/vinay-prasad/94646
You are ignoring the parents that lost children due to the vaccine, or now have children with ongoing medical issues.Children are not dying from covid. So there is no need to vaccinate them unless they are in a high risk category. The NY Times reported "For children without a serious medical condition, the danger of severe Covid is so low as to be difficult to quantify."
The net-benefit of the vaccine in kids is likely to be borderline at best. That is because 1) kids are already at very, very low risk from covid 2) the side effects of the vaccine seem to be as bad or worse in the young in healthy 3) actually getting the virus allows the immune system to see a much more complete picture of the virus which may lead to better long term immunity. The kid who actually gets the real thing may end up having a better chance of being protected at age 25 or 45 than the k
The severity of heart issues decreases with age. The risk of covid death increases with age. This children should not be getting vaccinated.
Ane yet that is what forums like these are mostly about. Sharing stories and receive validation. No reason to undermine a response that clearly was comparing one anecdote with another. Considering how children have been amazingly spared the effects of sars-cov-2 it is hard to see that they seem to have held the lions share of the mandates to slow the inevitable spread. And still do as the vaccined did not provide the high immuinty they initially promised. The vaccines do an amazing job
Danger to whom? The adults have their vaccine and the kids aren’t susceptible
