I've always thought that google had a conflicting business model - on the one hand search brings people in, but on the other it competes with ads. The better the search, the less useful the ads. Given this, google might be indirectly incentivized to only have search good enough to be better than competition, but not the best. Not saying they're actively doing that, but seems like something.

Time will only tell but search is definitely Google's bread and butter core and they will do anything to prevent any real competitor that might capture significant market share from them.

Yes. I don't have many specific complaints with Google Search. However, as companies get larger they often look "upward" at upper management and investors instead of looking "downward" at their customers. What I mean by this is they are often more concerned with pleasing their bosses, meeting revenue goals for investors, and generally not rocking the boat. This presents a great opportunity for small companies to disrupt the market. You should definitely read "Seeing What's Next" by Clayton Chr

this is, I believe, what will eventually bring google low. so long as the search results are more relevant than the ads, people will choose the search results when they are looking for things. If google starts nerfing search, they will eventually be overtaken by the competition.

Google search is not only ad-supported, it is also ad-supporting. it is carefully designed to collect and track your every click to feed their advertising business.I suppose google search business model in a post-adwords world could also be "we have enough cash to run this service until everyone currently alive is dead".In the event of google search disappearing, affected people would use other search engines and it would make room for better search engines to emerge which is har

If they had, they would have killed it.Google should be stomping everyone else but it's ad addiction in search will hold it back. Innovators dilemma...

Google hasn't been primarily a web search company for ages — it's an advertising company. Either way, their ultimate goal is to make more money and evidently they think this helps that.If you don't like their search service, you can use an alternative. The network effect fortunately doesn't apply to search engines.I hope (but doubt) that Google will make their search service sufficiently awful that they will erode their own monopoly.

they need to win search share to threaten Google's revenue model: take traffic from google.com, so google will sell ads. Going to ads busyness is not necessary for this.

Google is not going anywhere and they will easily replicate anything OpenAI does. Its not that magical. Why they still rely on search/advertising is well known - Replacing a 150 Billion $$$ source of revenue is not a simple thing. Its like trying to replace everything ppl do in a midsized rich country with something else. And compared to Facebook which is still 99% dependent on Ads, Google is much more diversified (total revenue is north of 250 billion). They have cloud, youtube, docs

google search is only as useful as the content that it points to. They used to incentivize people to make good content, now they re just stealing it, so people naturally will take their content off google or hide it behind walls. It's also not "leaps and bounds ahead beyond anything else" , but they have the network effect and technical lock in to be safe enough. Two things they did: first, they promoted the usage of the omnibox as search box, so now almost every browser is auto
