I used to value Ars because they had actual writers, editors, and original content. This new trend they have of being another content aggregator is disappointing.
I was on the verge of subscribing to it not too long ago till I did some research. It seems to have moved into a more sensationalist click-baitesque sphere.A shame, but I suppose from their perspective it must have been a case of "if you can't beat them, join them".
It's so sad what Wired has become
I don't know what happened to Ars...But in the early I remember I used to feel smarter having read something on Ars.Now it's all PR and movie reviews :-/Maybe Conde Nast happened.
It's The Verge. They haven't been able to do meaningful journalism in years.
What happened to the entertaining, informative giant that used to be the Gizmodo/Lifehacker/Kotaku network? They've faded into a bunch of pageview garnering alarmists. Someone got me thinking like this, I don't remember who, but the more I look at it, the more it seems like they're just capitalizing on current events to garner page views instead of trying to... Oh, I don't know... Do something useful.
Oh man I've not read highscalability in years! Shame it only seems to be Stuff the Internet Says and sponsored posts these days. Used to love their articles.
It's not that they are universally terrible now, just that they've fallen into the same political-hype blackhole as everyone else.I remember looking at their home page a few years ago and seeing the top 10 articles all being about Trump. That obsession with politics didn't really happen in previous eras and even when it did, it was counterbalanced by some legitimate literary criticism. Looking at their home page now, it's uh, not quite the same.
I used to be a very regular reader of techdirt but it's become clear to me their quality has declined and they've been going for clickbait headlines full time since changing the monetization strategy. Masnick still makes some valid points but they're few and far inbetween, and the other site writers are generally not a beneficial read.
I really used to enjoy reading lifehacker in years gone past. When Kinja happened, and then gawker imploded I gave up completely as by that point the articles had taken a turn for the worse.I hope this offers the site a new start and they can do longer form articles now
