Can't do much about NPM, but webpack is legacy now, no reason to use it for new projects. You can use esbuild if you just want compiling, or vite (which uses esbuild and roll up) if you want compiling + bundling + front end assets. It Just Works™. It's very fast, minimal effort, and vastly less complicated than webpack ever was. esbuild is not simply “more efficient webpack” so that’s quite misleading.
