Yea, by default. Last time I tried it manually, the kernel wouldn't boot. Best to have these things handled for you.

Does the system use a boot loader? Or does it boot directly into kernel bypassing bootloaders?

Yes, it means you need a reboot at the very least, and initramfs integration.
Seems reasonable our grey mass needs a bootloader.
Can anyone expect booting from it?
