The podcast app has always been bad - since iOS 4/5. Just use Overcast.
There's hundreds of alternatives... I've used Pocket Casts and Podcast Addict and both work fine.
Pocket Casts is excellent. The killer feature is server side feed updates. I subscribe to around 20 feeds. Checking for new episodes takes less than a second using Pocket Casts, every other apps I have tried takes at least two minuets.
Try using the Podcast app it’s even worst.
The built in Podcast app does that.
