This advice appears to be downvoted - can anyone suggest why a standing desk is not a good idea?

Stand up desk, walking around, and not sitting in the same position too long unless the posture is perfect.

get a sit/stand desk. Even better if it is with treadmill. I only wish i started to work standing 10-15 years ago instead of just the last couple of years.

I think your question should be, "should I be sitting so long?"There's ample evidence that extended sitting, especially relative to the amount of standing and walking, is detrimental to health (especially including weight).I spent years on the popular Herman Miller Aeron chairs, but eventually I developed lower back problems in my early 30s! So when I left my job and started working from home, I tried the standing desk thing...Indeed it takes time to get used to standing

The only people I see successfully using stuff like standing desks etc are people who are already fit and also go to the gym every day. For other folks like me the only thing that works is to take a proper 15 - 20 min break minimum every 2 hours and go for a walk, take a break every hour to get a glass of water or something, and exercise in a gym or somewhere at least thrice a week. Honestly this itself drains me!

I tried a standing desk and found it difficult to work standing for more than ~20 minutes at a time. It got to where I had to shift my weight so often that it became a distraction. I next tried a treadmill desk, and walking slowly made it much easier to work upright for 60+ minutes at a time. Every body is different, but walking was miles better than standing for me.

I don't see the words "standing desk" together in the comments yet. I am using one at the moment and later today I will be sitting. It is important to alternate lest you create new issues IMO.

The standing desk thing is silly. Just stroll around the block every few hours.

Everyone seems to use a standing desk to stand, I use a standing desk to walk. Standing still will definitely murder my back, while walking feels comfortable and natural. Long term effects might be bad, but sitting down just feels uncomfortable after a while, even on very good ergonomic chairs.

I don't know how anyone can stand (pun intended) working at a purely standing desk. You really need a treadmill to make it effective, both for your health and comfort. Standing stationary for long hours is not good for the circulation in your legs. Walking, on the other hand, is much more comfortable and leaves you with a warm after-workout feel after a long day.
