Battery Charge Limiting

The cluster discusses strategies for extending lithium-ion battery lifespan by limiting charging to 80-90% instead of 100%, explaining how full charges and extremes accelerate degradation, with mentions of device features in phones, laptops, and EVs.

Why not instead limit the charging level to 90%? Should save battery life as well.

If it's any consolation your battery will at least last longer than one which is always doing full cycles.

To extend the life of the battery. If you limit charging to ~ 80% it will get more charge cycles.

Looks like that's the case based on a cursory google search. Seems analogous to only charging batteries up to 80%. I wish companies would factor these issues into their products and leave invisible buffers, but I guess making them cheaper is more important than being consistent and reliable.

Lithium batteries degrade faster when very full or very empty. Samsung lets you limit to 85%.

Neither 0% nor 100% are dangerous, but lithium ion batteries wear out a lot faster if you cycle them all the way instead of only staying within 20-80%.

Being constantly charging is actually bad for the battery life. Being around 100% stresses it… so that’s why some Apple devices now try to determine how much charge is needed and keep it at 80% if possible

What is the benefit of limiting battery charging?

rollcat Jun 21, 2021 View on HN

You don't need to continue charging the battery past given percentage. It just happens that by default batteries don't charge past 100%, you can tell the firmware to stop at e.g. 40% which is a perfect compromise between having a bit of backup power and considerably extending its lifespan.

Most likely only if you keep them fully charged. If you can root the device you can control the state of charge.
