Is it still cheap if you factor in car cost + car maintenance?

Your whole car depreciates, not just the battery. Depreciation cost for driving a mile is a lot more than the electricity cost.

I think people under estimate just how much cheaper it is.Conservatively, suppose the car lasts 100k miles, and costs $50k including maintenance. Suppose it gets 10mpg, and each trip is 5 miles. Gas is $6/gallon.100k miles = 20k trips. 20k trips for $50k cost = $2.50 per ride + $3 gas = $5.50 fixed cost per ride, which is significantly cheaper than pretty much anything.

No because you have to account for peak usage and have the capacity for it. There will be car savings, but the math wont be as simple as you say it is.

Your number seems very you-specific. Back-of-the-envelope math, seems like you drive I totally believe that it is possible that these are indeed your costs but I'll give you a counter-example.My Highlander was about $50K all in. Let's say I keep it for 10 years, that&

If you put miles on your car, the gas and maintenance difference covers most to all of the difference. Especially if you get lesser deals to ride the upgrades in battery tech

Shouldn't one also factor in the cost of purchasing comparably classed vehicles? For example - the base Nissan Leaf costs 29k versus a comparable Nissan Versa costing 14k. 15k difference in vehicle is equivalent to just over 6000 gallons of gas (or around 186 thousand miles).

Possibly true. Anecdotally (just from talking to people) it seems like I don't pay much more, if at all, than do friends of mine with cars you might expect to be substantially cheaper to keep running. Perhaps it would be more costly if I went to a franchised dealer.Anyway, my feeling is borne out by the 2012/13 car running costs survey from the AA - see http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/running_costs/. If you drive an ICE that much you could be saving money vs renting a car when you need one. I've done the math, rental cars are expensive. Between the per day and per mile charges it doesn't take long to make up the cost of a cheap car. (if you insist on a new car of course that is much more expensive than a 10 year old car) I keep wanting to get rid of my truck that I only fill about 4x/year, but it turns out it is hard to rent a truck, as opposed to a truck shaped car. (I ha
