International is good; run up those SIM card charges.

Looks like their international roaming is pretty expensive. I guess I just change SIMs

Roaming cell fees - when traveling abroad (there are some ways around but very cumbersome)

Pay for an international roaming data plan if it's so important.

roaming does not always work, or is expensive. when i travel i get a local number. my previous number doesn't even work here despite having roaming, seemingly due to some incompatibility in the network. if i needed that number to access paypal, i'd be stuck.

i to the same whenever i travel abroad -- be it USA (i use t-mobile) or europe (went twice, used o2 twice). it's a lot less complicated.

Countries vary. Travelers buy SIMs when it's easy (e.g. EU). Some countries have more regulation, surveillance, billing or account provisioning glitches.

It could be using a non-US carrier without roaming enabled.
