I've been using write.as for several months now and it's worked great as a blog-only platform. They have a self hosted option called writefreely as well.I think some folks feel a blog needs a ton of branding and fancy javascript widgets everywhere to be a "blog" when all you need is a block of easily read text.
Just for blogging? I'll stick with Ghost
You're describing hosted WordPress (wordpress.com, instead of wordpress.org).If you don't care as much about customization or plugins, then WriteFreely is quite nice.If you're willing to put in a fair amount of coding and design effort, you could use a static site generator, backed by Netlify as the host.
I'll throw in my recommendation for Ghost if others also want to move their blog to "a site they control and a company they pay":https://ghost.org/They provide paid hosted services, or you can self-host it as it's free and open source (https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost). Far better than wordp
You might wish to try postach.io if you don't have time for Ghost, as all you need to do is just create an account and start blogging. :)
TryGhost. It's still limited in features, but it is good for simple blogs.
Maybe what you're looking for blogging is Ghost.https://ghost.org/
I'm a big fan of Ghost for new blogs https://github.com/tryghost/ghost
Write your own blogging engine and self hosting? That's what I do.
I liked your article, why don't you check out Ghost? I can help you spin up a VPS and a Ghost blog if you like in an hour, pro bono of course.https://ghost.org/marketplace/
