I don't really care to continue this line of debate too much longer, and it may have already gone too far, as HN is not a political debating forum. But I am very skeptical of anything reported in any of the big media outlets[1]. Off course you have to get your news somewhere, I am just very sensitive to the background narrative, be it Western, Russian or Korean. So the "party" line I am speaking about is how certain countries are always branded as the "bad/corrupt&#x
News may be filtered to create skewed view. Note that the "alternatives" you list are all from US or its allies.
> I know it sounds tin-foil-hat-y, I donβt trust western media coverage on Russia or ChinaThat's not tin-foil-hat-y at all. Of course Western media isn't going to paint a too rosy picture of traditional "adversaries" compared to their own countries.Look at how the situation in Belarus has all but eclipsed the protests against police brutality in the US. Even in Wikipedia's front page list of ongoing events! Apparently everything must be fine back home now.
tbf this is pretty similar to what the left in the US says about billionaires. I wouldn't completely discount it as state propaganda. In the US, it is incredible how often reporters parrot security state talking points without any research into whether they're accurate, such as how people piled on Russia after the recent hacking scandal without any evidence shown, just a gut insinuation as far as I know. The only advice I can give is: always be skeptical. period.
You read or heard about those things from reports originating in western media (yes, you might have read it somewhere else, but even the People's Daily is reliant on western media for the stories it makes about how the west is bad). The free dissemination of information sets us apart from the likes of China and Russia. We shouldn't self-censor news from China because Biden is an asshole, we can report about both. If the situation really was symmetrical, there wouldn't be any discu
The Western press seems to more or less parrot the government talking points or are even more hawkish themselves. Criticism is offered on minor topics or is feeble and drowned in a torrent of other articles. One could recognize this also with the Coronavirus fiasco when for example the press was parroting the governments saying that the virus is not going to come to Europe and urging people not to be racist against the Chinese (extra funny given the current mainstream position against China).
Here are a couple of links that support your opinion. Unfortunately most people here might not be aware that western media is quite biased.http://orientalreview.org/2014/01/24/coup-in-western-ukraine...http:
As opposed to the propaganda free US media?
They're doing a terrible job misinforming about fake terrorist attacks and so on.However,Western media and forums end up becoming quite biased in their own PC. Different points of views are often ignored or nonexistent(strong herd mentality). If Russians limited their actions to showing another side of the story, I don't think it'd be a bad thing.
It's not that different how the media in my home country (The Netherlands, e.g. 'Nieuwsuur') have been reporting in Syria and are starting to report Ukraine - in the trenches, literally on the fronts, following and interviewing people on both sides.Of course, everyone already knew that CNN and others are garbage. If the reality doesn't align with their great capitalism fairytale where Bono is the pinnacle of humanism, they will make it fit ;).
