A non-universal language doesn't imply extinguishing other languages.
Don't we risk losing something if everyone is using their own dialect of the language?
Language evolution isn't always good.
I am sad I am not seeing a strong cultural push towards everyone learning a single common language (which, for historical reasons, could well be English) at least as a well-acquired second language. Instead, the received present-day norm is to insist on cultural and linguistic diversity. Learn Spanish. Learn Mandarin. Learn German. Learn French. Oh, and while you are at it, learn Welsh or Irish too... It’s bewildering. And those enormous corps of translators seem like such a wasted effort!
Do we really need more languages?
Surely the speaking of some other language is the charm? The lack of a common language is a pain.
I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, yes, it's a pity to see a cultural artifact like a language fade away. I get that. But on the other hand, having the world Balkanized into thousands of mutually incomprehensible linguistic ghettoes is a bad thing, because it makes it harder to get things done on large scales. Things would just be easier if we spoke a manageable handful of languages.
I'd argue almost no one is having their language and culture taken from them (that was certainly the case in other times in history, but I find it difficult to find one today). There's nothing stopping you from learning another language, or using another language 50-70% of the time. This is a completely transactional phenomenon. You want to communicate with more people, and be understood in almost any part of the world, and possibly make more money doing just about any job? Speak Eng
What’s wrong with letting the language die?
A language that everyone used would be great.
