The crash of Western Civilisation may suffice.Unless we've created self-replicating, web-enabled, grey goo first.
The destruction of civilization will probably cap our ability to do further significant damage. If not, then our extinction surely will.
assuming civilization doesn't collapse firstinteresting assumption that might be worth expanding
Human civilization has collapsed before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Late_Bronze_Age_collapseLike you said, what remains may no longer be as we know it, but then again humanity has gone through so many paradigm shifts (and the shifts are accelerating due to technology) that it would be surprising if civilization was the same 50-100 years from now.
Humans won't go extinct but modern civilization might
The article isn't saying that civilization won't exists. It's saying that there could be a disaster on the scale of previous disasters such as the Civil War or early industrialization. Notably, there have been numerous cases where a disaster wiped out a given society even if other societies still existed or replaced it.
Civilizations cone and go.Humanity will be fine.
Humanity may survive, but our civilization likely won't. It relies on cheap energy and a stable climate, both are under threat. Good luck manufacturing a MRI machine when you're struggling to grow enough food for next year.
Thats assuming all civilizations don't collapse before then due to environmental destruction.
I don't think that humanity will survive a collapse of the current civilisation. First, we don't have the knowledge to go back to a pre-civilisation culture anymore. And second; we don't have the habitat to go pre-civilsation hunter/gatherer anymore. It's pretty much make or break for humanity.(As an aside: we've pretty much exhausted the easily available fossil energy sources, so no re-starting a civilsation on the glowing embers of knowledge and wisdom hidden
