Solar panels now sell for about 45c a watt out of China. Cost to create is around 36c / watt. This allows deployments such as in Chile & Dubai where the cost/kwh is 3 cents & below. This now cheaper than coal, without subsidy.Remove the subsidies that oil, gas & coal receive, and you will witness a new day.Only problem for solar right now is over supply caused by a sudden drop in demand. China reduced its subsidy a bit. Also the US extended subsidy for 5 years,

"Solar is expensive" is no longer true. Wholesale PV panels are less than $1 per watt now; this is 1/10 the price of 15 years ago. PV electricity is cost-comparable to coal-fired electricity in many places, and is on track to be cheaper than coal everywhere very soon [0]. This happened largely because China has been dramatically increasing their PV manufacturing capacity to the point that almost no other country makes solar panels any more, but still, the fact is that today

do you know why solar cost are decreasing? https://www.wsj.com/articles/behind-the-rise-of-u-s-solar-po...

Solar power is very cheap and still getting cheaper:https://www.statista.com/chart/35117/levelized-cost-of-energ...

you may be interested to know that the price of solar panels has dropped by half in the last year and a factor of 24 over the last 15; see my summary at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39544358

Assuming there aren't economies of scale. Demand for solar had gone way up in recent decades (e.g. in germany, before it was cheap), and the price subsequently went down.

I'd absolutely do it now. The price of solar has been beneath that of racks, mounts, wiring and installation for a while now. Even assuming a major breakthrough your costs probably wont change that much because panel cost isnt a big % of what your costs will be anyway. There's also a risk that supply chain bottlenecks/cold war with china will drive up the cost & your electric bill is only gonna go up.

You... clearly haven't tracked the cost of solar panels. Learning curves are a thing https://ourworldindata.org/learning-curve

Renewables are already cheaper than coal:https://www.google.com/search?q=wind+solar+cheaper+than+coal...I saw a chart a decade ago that projected when the cost of rooftop photovoltaic panels would be be less than the install cost, and it was before now. Looks like that happened around last year ($3 per watt for panel, $3 per watt for install cost):<a href=

Solar PV became the "cheapest source of energy in history" levels 3 years ago in places with low cost of capital, prices have continued to fall and are forecast to keep dropping as we get more experience.https://www.carbonbrief.org/solar-is-now-cheapest-electricit...
