What if its why we can't teach critical thinking :)
Okay, I see what you’re saying, but that’s literally what thinking critically is. It’s vital that one be taught to identify when they’re not thinking critically. Perhaps it is the case that many people simply refuse to think critically, in which case education about how to think critically is clearly not the problem.
In my opinion, this says more about poor education standards regarding critical thinking.
We're either going to improve our collective critical thinking, or we are... not.
Critical thinking is not taught properly in western schools.
Public figures speak with authority - and like it or not, most of the world’s population has an underdeveloped ability to think critically (it isn’t taught in schools because it “undermines parental authority”, apparently: https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/vo26x/texas_gop_w... ).
I see critical thinking as a voluntary process. You have to be willing to violate your worldview - not just entertaining the idea that you are wrong. Additionally, the tools for critical thinking can just as easily be used to reinforce one's own worldview. I see the issue as an mindset problem rather than a lack of education problem.
To be honest I don't want to go into JStor to search for studies that support my viewpoint and lob them at you in a game of citation tennis. Teach critical thinking? Not everything needs to be spoonfed to everyone all the time.
I have a much better idea: how about you acquire some critical thinking skills instead? It'll serve you well in the long run.
