Valuations are based on expectations--so the price is saying that Tesla is a 'Future' Car Company.
Tesla's stock price has always seemed completely irrational to me. Tesla's market cap is over double Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, VW, GM, and Ford combined. If I am not mistaken, Telsa stock is currently worth more than all other car manufacturers combined, while selling a small fraction of the total vehicles, with no huge margin.
