Why can't people just ignore stuff they don't like and leave people alone. :-(

I don't think it is extreme, I simply choose not to surround myself with people who find me distasteful. Seems like the ideal solution for both of us.

You're missing a key point. These are unsolicited comments from strangers in public places. To not associate with them I would have to stop going out in public.
