EU vs US Dev Salaries

The cluster focuses on comparisons of software developer salaries between Europe and the US, highlighting how much lower pay is in Europe (even in tech hubs like Germany, UK, and France) compared to US levels in SF/NY, with debates on reasons like market forces, cost of living, and talent attraction.

That is not only in France, it's in all Europe. Salaries in Germany, The Netherlands, UK and so on are much much lower than in SF or NY. Developer jobs that pay more than 60k euro are few and far between. A 50k+ job is already above average and upgrading is not going to be easy.

Perhaps once the EU pays more than 50% of the salary that is paid in the US to software devs/analysts/etc, we'll see this behavior change.

it's that it's the only place where you can get salaries which are even remotely close to what you get in the USnot sure developers in Switzerland, especially those at Googles European hub in Zurich would agree.

I have coworkers here in the USA, from Europe. You do know the pay is significantly higher for software engineers in the USA compared to anywhere in the EU correct?

If you think software engineering salaries are low in the USA, try working in Europe. A 'good' salary can be 30K or even lower after tax per year, and electricity costs twice as much as in the USA. In some places, even bottle scavengers earn more than software engineers in Europe.

Not just Eastern Europe. The salaries are much lower in the UK, Germany, etc. which means anyone on this side of the pond working for the same company could end in a situation like this.

Maybe because we European software developers earn a small fraction of what US ones do?

Do you mean a particular part of Europe? I only ask because there are more factors than salary. I have friends who have moved to work in France, Norway, and Germany. They do make markedly less than I do on my US salary. However, they also get:* Substantially more actual vacation time* Substantially cheaper and yet similar health, dental, and vision coverage* Less risk/stress associated with job security* A very similar job marketI don't imagine this is the same in every

It's not, but I (as the parent has pointed out) find it astounding that salaries are so low compared to the US. Not necessarily because of absolute value of the salary, but because of the relative value to the biz people work in.AFAIK, SaaS companies aren't charging demonstrably less for their applications in the EU than they are in the US. So the ratio from development to commercial value in the EU is significantly higher. In other words, management/founders/investments

For software development jobs across Europe you typically make at least as much or more in cheaper countries, as salaries are not significantly lower. Things are not in your favor for other fields though.
