This article sounds woefully out of touch with the realities of the modern web.So many of the arguments surrounding Damore talk as if this is in a vacuum, when frankly, it isn't. Much of the message it carried(and did little to discourage) came off as insulting to a group of people who commonly spend every day harassed just for what they are, anytime they have gone online. The article talks a lot about the fear of an online mob shaming people for doing something, yet completely ignores
And here folks I guess we have a real case of harassment.I think there is a line to be drawn somewhere between here and pycon (two men talking privately about something that could be understood as offensive). That said I am surprised about two things:* People trying to argue that this should not be punished because everyone would do if they were safe from repercussions. I strongly believe that a big chunk of the audience here would not steal, kill etc without reason even if they w
A thought exercise:Let’s say a popular HN user with a large following (let’s call them “Dex”) starts a campaign on HN to harass you. They start posting lies all over the site, claiming you hit puppies, spit in the coffee of blond people, and talk at the theatre. Dex has rabid fans that take his word over their own research, and those users start to hate you. You start getting hate messages, and they eventually dox you.> The only people being bothered are the people that want to be bothe
Why is it the only time I hear about Kathy Sierra is when she's talking about being harassed? The world is full of all types of people who get their kicks in all types of ways. Unless you propose monitoring everybody so that any offensive speech can be punished, there is always going to be a contingent that will capitalize on any chink in psychological armor just to get someone's ire up. When someone's image primarily consists of being a victim, it's not terribly sur
Sure, you could spam me on the internet, but this person was talking about offline harassment.
Do you have a link? People are not necessarily anonymous on SO, so harassment could be real.
Would be funny if they experience harassment out of being exposed as a harassing person. This seems something that could happen on the internet.
Harassment is against the law. Maybe your platform shouldn't allow such abuse? They can fix their platform so this isn't possible without banning anybody. I'm just brainstorming here.
I don't know why you're so resistant to the idea that harassment is commonplace for certain groups of people. Look at the stark difference when this founder replaced her picture with her male cofounder's on their support chat, for example [1].Or again, just ask women or other marginalized people in your life what their experience is like online. Tons of ordinary non-famous people I know have stories just like these.[1] <a href="https://www.kapwing.com/blog
Isn't that he same point the article is making? People in both GG and anti GG were both doxxing, making sock puppet accounts, closing each other's events with threats. It was reported as 'internet people hate women' the same way this was.
