If it helps, I had the exact same experience. Setup was possible but involved way too many decisions for the obvious use case.
Yea the setup takes way too long. I got it working and it's really nice, but I don't really see any reason why it can't be a one step process.

I have. TBH it was more trouble than it was worth, and I had some trouble with the initial setup. It was a couple years ago now though, so it's possibly gotten better.
