Have you tried an e-ink screen like the kindle? It's perfect for consuming fiction books

Have you tried e-ink? I have an old kindle for reading. It's fantastic.

Have you tried Kindle (or other e-reader) instead of iPad? Works very well for me.

Wouldn't a tablet be a better interface for that style of reading? e-ink doesn't have the best of refresh rates.

I have a Kindle and iPad and use them for different things, I found the iPad isn't very good for book reading, it's too heavy, too bright and the battery life isn't good enough. On the other hand I can read from the kindle just like I would read from a paperback. The only thing I would like to see from Amazon is a larger display version that is suitable for technical books.

Because I do not like the way e-ink displays look (such as the Kindle), I bought the Nook Color. To me, it is smaller and lighter than the iPad, but large enough to comfortably read books normally printed on large pages. For technical books, I paid $1 for the ezPDF reader app. Also, it has a browser (and other features you would expect in a tablet), so I can also easily read books on sites such as Safari, in addition to other sites if I want. Also it is quite affordable. Highly recommende

Why is reading a book functionally different than reading a kindle?

dylanjermiah Jul 28, 2015 View on HN

Thinking of buying an iPad just for this use case. Most of my technical books are in PDF form, converting them to any other format ruins the readability, and the PDF on the kindle is terrible to navigate.

A Kindle should be fine, preferably without backlight however.

It's a matter of preference I guess. I do find eink substantially easier on the eyes though. Plus the form factor is better for lying in bed while reading
