Probably to reduce the dependency on Russian gas.

EU is still buying gas from Russia but plans are being cancelled. German pipeline has been cancelled, and EU plans to minimize use of Russian gas in the coming years.Last I heard Russia was losing money on oil as they had discounted it heavily and now had to ship it, instead of using pipelines.Saudi Arabia is not Russia, and Russia is invading a democratic country that is a part of the western world and like it or not Europeans can relate to Ukrainians. People care more when their friend g

EU needs Russian oil and gas they can't put up a serious fight

Invading Ukraine sent the message that relying on Russia for energy is unwise as well as unethical. No country in the EU thinks it's a good idea to buy gas from Russia and it's going to end broken pipes or not. There's really nothing to gain for the US from blowing up the pipe that couldn't easily be accomplished via conversations.

A small correction - Russia cut off EU from gas, not the other way round. The EU had a long term plan to wean itself off Russian gas, but Russia pre-empted it.The ballsy part was that EU was leading a foreign policy (support for Ukraine) while knowing it will probably lead to Russia cutting off the gas supply.

Yes.Fun fact, all of the natural gas that Germany bought from Russia used to flow through former Warsaw Pact nations like Poland. Now the gas goes at least partially through the undersea Nord Stream pipeline and the under construction Nord Stream 2. It's generally believed that this transition has made Russia much more bellicose in the region, as they can now threaten to turn off Poland's gas supply without also harming Western Europe at the same time.

This is a funny article considering that there’s literally a war going on where Germany has been hesitant to oppose Russia because it’s move to renewables left it highly dependent on Russian gas. https://fortune.com/2022/02/25/ukraine-anger-sanctions-germa...

You mean not getting gas from Russia?

curtis3389 Jan 5, 2021 View on HN

IIRC, Russia provides gas to Europe.

Incentives don’t align for Russia (lose revenue) and Russia could just turn off the gas if it wanted to. Putin is a wildcard, but still, if he wanted to “teach Europe a lesson” he would just come out and say I’m turning the gas off, freeze to death. Also, Biden promised that they had the capability and desire to take out the pipelines if Russia invaded so there is that. Plus, the US would stand to profit from exporting LNG to Germany.
