That depends on the page of course. This behaviour lets advertisers cross-correlate users.

What can you expect from an ad company ? Not tracking you would mean hurting their own business.

The AD targeting they sell is based on this tracking connecting you across sites

ginko Mar 10, 2022 View on HN

Wouldn't that still allow advertisers to track you through your IP or other means?

ehutch79 Jun 18, 2021 View on HN

If it's fetching ads, it has to 100% be sending some data to someone, who is likely able to correlate it and track you. It doesn't take much.

How could you possibly server personalized ads without tracking?

graycat Mar 30, 2016 View on HN

There's a chance that some Web site ad targeting is being done this way.

Yes true. There is no way to have targeted advertising w/out tracking.

AFAIK it gives advertisers aggregated data on the performance of the ads, such as "23% of the clicks on the ad end up buying the product". I would be enlightened to hear how this can be used as part of my fingerprint.

How are they going to show you no ads if they don't know it's you? They have to track you for it to work.
