It's more accurate to say that Universities and Colleges are extinct so the story should be what is taking its place and what are the consequences...Its just like the Ed loan program..Many don't realize its a teaching goal tool, those that get that they need to form a business around their brand to pay off the loan win and those that do not lose and society loses.We should not bet on society losing this time around such as the elites did in the US!

Maybe the university is bloated and as always those who should move on are finding it hard to leave their comfort zone and do something customers are willing to pay for.Thankfully I'm unlikely to ever spend a dime with universities again but even if I had a reason I'd look really hard to not to, because institutions of high education, their staff and students seem to be most interested in doing whatever they can to promote anti-freedom agendas. This is not realistic, sadly. American universities are businesses, they have been turned into money-making enterprises, education is a concern but not really a primary one.

I don't think universities deliberately take advantage of either students or professors. I think the people who run them are for the most part genuinely idealistic. The problem is that universities (through lack of competition and inelasticity of demand) got to be terribly inefficient, and thus gradually and unintentionally ended up in a position where they were taking advantage of people.
