I've accepted that if the worst predictions are true, we're doomed. No one is willing to make these sacrifices. How much energy are we wasting having this discussion here? How much energy is wasted on computers and entertainment and machine learning and bitcoins and other popular topics here? How much energy do celebrity environmentalists and "green" politicians waste flying around the world?Has any Democrat proposed making serious sacrifices to stop climate change?

That's a false dichotomy, maybe they could work on decreasing the rate of climate change instead of increasing it.

Throwing money at climate change doesn't fix it. Telling entities that already ravage the planet does. But which one do you think is easier for everyone universally to say "I'm helping!" without actually doing anything?

You are on the right side of the solution. The problem isn't people such as yourself, or people who do not believe in climate change, the problem is the people in the middle who do not care one way or another. They will not be convinced until their groceries are expensive and pick up trucks need $6 per gallon. The feedback is already starting. We will never see a "naive" planet Earth again, but already the environmental trouble we are causing is being slowly turned into political

You're being down voted but you're making an extremely important point. It's very, very difficult to convince people to reduce their quality of life because something bad is going to happen in the future to people who may or may not be them. You see this all over the place in other domains such as diet (people know they should eat less but don't), exercise (people don't do it), personal finance (people don't save), alcohol and drug use (people don't stop), medi

This is a whataboutism that distracts from actually doing anything meaningful about climate change. We can't fix the entire problem, but combating climate change will require everyone to do as much as they can - so we should get to doing our part in transforming our economy.

The problem (as I see it) was s not R&D, it's human nature. If there is a possible self driving car we can put things off, imagine a different mix etc.Almost all of the climate chnage debate is really (excluding the fringes) not "is climate chnage real" but "exactly how much do I have to do to fix it".An analogy is I don't dispute that I am overweight, and that will impact my lifespan, but t there is a debate on whether that means a calorie controlled plan

It's not that we should not do what you're suggesting but clearly we're not able to due to political differences. I'm suggesting that we may need to take a different approach to tackle the problem that considers political realities. Trying to reduce the carbon emissions is not the only way to address the climate change, many people argue that it may no longer be sufficient anyway. Suggestion is to focus on the fact that it's happening and try to find ways to reverse it,

You are wrong. As long as one is living in a democracy, it is very easy for the individual to change things. To fight climate change, we mainly have to get rid of carbon fuels for electricity production and for transport. Except for flying, there are carbon-free replacements for both, which require no sacrifices from individuals. Keep pushing for them.

I think it's problematic to focus exclusively on individual responsibility for averting climate change. Climate change is a massive global problem, intimately related to the structure of the global economy. The scale of the problem and the changes needed to mitigate it are thus far beyond the reach of any individual consumer. Problems at this scale can only be addressed by nation states and transnational actors, as was done for CFCs for example. Unfortunately these actors have been dragging
