Peripherally related book recommendation: https://www.amazon.com/Vital-Question-Evolution-Origins-Comp... Someone here on HN recommended it to me and it was an awesome read (that I doubt I understood).

I am in the middle of reading Stephen Jay Gould's "Rocks of Ages". It looks like this touches on this subject. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocks_of_AgesIt is an interesting book and it is fun to see the subject come up at this time.

Yes and his book "The Vital Question", which covers some of the same ground. Highly recommend.

Has anyone else here read Nick Lane's new book - The Vital Question - I just finished it and this article really seems like a continuation of some of his theories he talks about.I found about the book from HN, and have since bought every single other book by him, almost done with Life Ascending now, which is also amazing

Last year Bill Gates recommended The Vital Question (found this on HN):https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OD8Z4JW/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?...One of the best books I have ever read.

You may like "The Vital Question" by Nick Lane, a book which presents one possible scenario in a quite readable way. Much of it is quite speculative of course, but you get a good idea what the basic principles are.

His book "The Vital Question" is eminently readable: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1555361842

Read the Blind Watchmaker and then The Selfish Gene. These books should help you understand the science behind life's existence.(For the uninitiated)

If this topic interests you, I recommend reading "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins.
